Reducing Stress and Anxiety (Part 2)

Last time we looked at the origins of, and relationship between, stress and anxiety. Today we look at the approach of Hypnotherapy in helping alleviate and reduce those negative emotions.

How Hypnotherapy Helps with Stress & Anxiety

Most stressful feelings are caused by fear or apprehension of some type and can be better understood by simply talking with someone and their own unique personal circumstances and set of symptoms, feelings and the root cause of this fear, and situations, that lead to these stressful emotions.

It is the role of the hypnotherapist when dealing with a client suffering from stress and anxiety to try to discover the Initial Sensitising Event (ISE) or the actual trigger that has led to these feelings of stress and then work on a therapeutic programme to help the client to deal with these feelings and ensure that the stressful feelings reduce to a ‘normal’ level so the client can cope better. It is important to develop a tailored program specifically for each person, with some techniques and methods to help them to relax more.

For example if a client experiences anxiety each time they visit the dentist then the key is to get them to stop focusing on that fear internally through a suitable induction, relaxation and a deepener. Once the client is in a deepened trance state, then they can be taken through the process of getting that fear diminished through positive hypnosis techniques and to make the client more suggestible and open to a new way of thinking about that situation and re-program them so they don’t feel that fear when next visiting the dentist.

Ultimately, in order to eliminate a phobia, the therapist will need to identify the trigger moment or Initial Sensitising Event (ISE) from speaking with the client and then customise a script that will create an alternative way of thinking and reacting to that situation. This is one reason why the initial consultation, rapport and communication with the client is vital, in order to develop a suitable, customised screed and plan for a suitable therapeutic treatment. It’s important to drill down to get focus on the specific cause of the phobia or feelings of anxiousness and then get them to develop feelings of inner-confidence, positive feelings and calmness that surrounds them whenever they feel those anxious feelings emerging.

There are several steps as a Hypnotherapist that we need to take -:

  • Assess if there is any type of phobia
  • Find out if there are any secondary gains?
  • Identify if the client knows the source
  • If it is complex then see if there are deeper issues in the past causing the fear
  • Write an appropriate screed
  • Assess the clients progress
  • If no progress is made, re-evaluate and look at whether there are deeper issues

As a Hypnotherapist I focus on looking to achieve a good practice of helping clients with acute stress, episodic stress and some cases of chronic stress, although the latter should only be undertaken with a doctor’s consent.

Checklist and FREE Relaxation MP3 for Self-Hypnosis

  1. Find a quiet spot where you are unlikely to be disturbed and make sure you are warm and comfortable as your body temperature can drop when in a state of deep relaxation.
  2. Turn off any bright lights and any technology that you will not need, turn your mobile ringer/volume down.
  3. Make sure your head is supported by a cushion or pillow if you are lying down and that your legs are uncrossed and your arms and hands are resting gently in your lap or by your sides.
  4. Close your eyes and take 3 deep belly breaths. As you breath in, imagine you are breathing in relaxation and calm and as you breath out feel like you are letting go of any stress or tension. Remember, this is your time…even if just for 5 or 10 minutes to just relax and do nothing.
  5. If at any point you find your mind wandering, just notice that and gently bring your attention back to your breathe….perhaps repeating, “Breathing in I feel calm, breathing out I let go.”

I’ve recorded a special FREE Relaxation MP3 which you can get access to by via me website at SunlightMind.com. It is a progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) script, takes less than 10 minutes and you can download the MP3 to listen to anytime you feel the need to just relax and chill out or to help you drift off to sleep.
