Never a Dull Moment

Overheard in my English classroom…

Me: Okay, now that we’re finished with our apostrophe unit, one of the things I’ll be looking for when I read your narratives is that you’ve used your apostrophes correctly. 
Student 1: I just won’t use any words with apostrophes.
Me: That’s fine, but if you happen to use a word that is supposed to have one…off with your head!
Student 2: Look out! She suddenly reminds me of the Queen of Hearts.
Student 1: I don’t think we have to worry. Last time I checked there were no guillotines nearby. 
Student 2: Maybe she has one of those things where you lean over and the blade comes down.
