This article completely missed the boat. Trump wasn’t asking his audience of Evangelicals to boost the Mormon vote, he was trying to inspire their loyalty by invoking “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” logic. Since many Evangelicals, particularly those in the clergy, feel that Mormons aren’t true Christians, and since Mormons overwhelmingly rejected Trump in the Utah primary, Trump wants Evangelicals to show increased support for him to demonstrate a clear distinction between them and Mormons. The lesson for this author is: if you don’t know the historical background to a story, don’t try and make up for it by getting your sources from Twitter. This article is just spreading the confusion of random people around to a larger audience. The Washington Post had an excellent article about this speech that understood Trump’s intentions clearly: Trump’s enemy is whoever he thinks his current audience wants him to hate, which is a terrifying worldview for a potential leader.
