Hey, yall! How has this winter been treating you? I won’t lie. I’m definitely having some trouble. It’s freezing in Chicago, & I wanna hibernate. But we move.

An update about the future of the newsletter: Revue (the platform where we previously shared our updates) is shutting down. We’ve moved to Medium for the future.

Regardless, you can always catch us on Twitter & Discord. Also, if you’re interested, you can find an informative Twitter thread about Discord here.

Much love, everyone! Here’s hoping my season turns around a little bit. ❤ In this issue, you’ll find updates about our sponsors, some of the art we’ve collected, as well as some of the projects that our sponsors are funding.

November Updates

Wow! What beautiful news.

Do yall remember the last issue when I highlighted Kamzy Nuel’s photo Neyomi II? The photographer won an award for that image! Congrats to them.

Kamzy Nuel is a Nigerian portrait photographer & smartphone photography enthusiast.

All throughout November, Sunrise teased & planned all of their Art Basel shenanigans. I heard it was a blast, but I’ll update yall with photos & such next month.

Over the last few newsletters, I’ve updated yall about Jetzi & Elise’s recent industry-grade photoshoot with the women in Free Root Operation’s BLOOM Cohort.

Do you know a Black or brown woman in Chicago who may be interested in a 6-month cohort that centers her transformation through self care, self love, & nourishment? Free Root Operation does this work! More information here.

Staring back at me by kioniii

A while ago, Sunrise Sponsors voted on eight artists to purchase NFTs from with some proceeds from the Sunrise fund. We received over 200 submissions. I’ve highlighted 4 of the 8 artists so far in this issue & this issue, but you can also peep all of the pieces together here. You can find more information about the NFT Purchase Program here.

This first piece up top is “Staring back at me” by queer multidisciplinary artist & creative producer from Kenya, kioniii.

This piece below me is “The One” & it’s by Toni Payne, who is a still life & documentary photographer in LA. She’s also a poet, podcaster, & food content creator.

Upcoming News & Events

Night on the Yard Summer 2022 by Gonzalo Munguía 🖌

Night on the Yard has launched, but we’re going to do it all over again, in order to garner way more attention for our artists who are incarcerated. Nonetheless, you can find out more the mission here under the heading “Sunrise Spotlight,” & about Gonzalo Munguía here.

We’ve set a date for our Lunar Blossoms PFP project! I’ll let you know when it’s time to get that ETH ready, okay? As I’ve mentioned before, the PFP project is a part of our apprentice program & will feature art from Alyssa. Our other apprentice, Byanca has taken care of a lot of the development for the site.

There’s lots more in the works with regard to expansion, as well as more IRL events. I’ll cue yall in when it’s time to announce!

What’s going on in the crypto world?

Elise (our founder) at AfroTech

So, I know we’ve been diving deeply into our vocabulary words in past issues, but let’s switch it up this time around. There’s been a lot of icky news about crypto within the past couple of months, & it’s easy to feel fearful about the future of the space. It’s perfectly healthy to wonder if a space or industry is right for you! Just wanted to throw that out there.

Still riding with us? Here are some informative threads on OpenSea royalties & Blockchain literacy, & a short article by NFT Now on PFP projects.

I’ve left you with a lot, lol, but if you still would like to learn more, or bookmark for the future, here’s our informative NFT 101 page on Notion!
