Reflection About Psychological Testing and Research

Go beyond the limits

Psychological tests and research in the last century have made great contributions to our understanding of human behaviour. Psychologists and other scientists develop newer and more sophisticated tests every day to increase our knowledge and understanding of human behaviour. Today, we know so much about human beings, their motivations, cognitive processes, behaviours and much more. All of these have been made possible thanks to a great tool: science.

Science is a magnificent tool, it is the best tool we have at hand to advance our understanding of human psychology. With psychological experiments and controlled designs, we are able to establish causality about different behaviours, difficulties, illnesses, etc. But I think we should remember that probably most people at different times in history thought that they have the best tools and that they know everything. So maybe we shouldn't do the same thing. We shouldn't assume that at this specific time in history, we have all the necessary tools to know everything about psychology. Maybe we shouldn't reject possible explanations about human behaviour and its nature simply because science and research haven’t found evidence to prove them yet. Science changes and it should change, it is part of its nature.

So if change is part of psychological science and findings aren't always fixed, stable, perfect and often change (not to mention controversies in the field), maybe we need to be more open-minded. Maybe we need to open our eyes more and don’t forget that there was a time where people thought that the earth was flat and scientists were ostracized when they said it wasn't. And think about who we are ostracizing now.

In conclusion, I think that while we conduct research, take or develop psychological tests and follow psychological findings passionately, we shouldn't limit ourselves, our beliefs and our self-worth to what has been proven or yet to be proven.
