My grandmother used to say that there is a time and place for everything. There is a very simple wisdom in those words, albeit perhaps she lived during “simpler times”. Nonetheless, I believe that while social media has its advantages, using such out of context, frightening and visual powers of suggestion in such a public arena does 2 things: (especially for people who are not familiar with the author)
1) It creates fear and confusion (as a couple of respondents have illustrated). What if you hadn’t replied?
2) It could be read as endorsing the actions described. There are young readers who can be very negatively impacted, meanwhile the author has simply needed to get something off her chest (or it would appear so).
Freedom and freedom of expression is valuable, however, being mindful supersedes that freedom. With all due respect, Heather Nann I have read a lot of your words and resonate with your expression. This post, as powerful as it is, I feel, was not a mindful post. You tagged it under “shitty poetry” and that is where I will agree with you.
There is a place and time for everything.
Namaste.
