A Meaningful Life

I believe a satisfactory life is a life lived meaningfully; to live for a purpose. It has been said that a happy life is one that consists of someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to. And, in order for these things to happen, the person must dare to take risks. Indeed, it is the failure to take risks that holds a person’s life back from growing. What more, isn’t a life lived in certainty such a boring life? The person must have to courage to stand up for himself, in the face of opposition from others and, especially, from one’s own deeply trenched unwillingness to change. That is, he must be bold enough to change. Only in this way can a person’s life be truly lived to the fullest.

Yet, despite the idealism, practicality must be taken into account. Firstly, one must accept that money plays an important part in the operation of our daily lives. We need money for rent, food, things, etc. One must somehow find a way of making money, whilst doing meaningful work. The ideal circumstance is when the meaningful work generates money. Secondly, one must question the consequences of following one’s dream. How would such a decision affect others? Is it worth it? What is the pursuit of one’s dream if it destroy another’s? Thirdly, the taking of risks must be intelligently assessed. That is to say, risks should be taken only when they are worth taking. The hard part is the assessment of such risks. How do we decided if a risk is worth taking or not?
