This is absolutely true and not only in the Service Design field. Too often companies get stuck in building their own 100% (IT) solutions (because they think they’re unique) while the 95% (standard) solution cost a fraction. It’s about the experience not about who created it and how perfect it is. The perfect solution often has some real disadvantages making the total experience less perfect.
