Conor McGregor just won the fight, all thanks to social media.
The fight between Conor “The Notorious” McGregor and Floyd “Money” Mayweather just happened today. I think that Conor McGregor, though losing the fight at the 10th round, is the winner of the fight.

Conor McGregor just made his boxing debut against one of the best boxers to date, Floyd Mayweather, who had a stunning 49–0 record before the fight. This fight is getting attention from all over the world because of the dynamic personalities of the two fighters and how unusual the fight is.
Conor McGregor is a two division winner and title owner in UFC, the first to accomplish such feat. He is also famous for being a trash talker before fights and extremely confident in himself. In fact, he got his nickname “the notorious” because of his obnoxious behaviors.
Floyd Mayweather, on the other hand, is an undefeated boxing champion with a 49–0 (now 50–0) record. He is currently one of the richest athletes to date. His social media is filled with stacks of money laid out, fleets of exotic sports cars, and boxes of eye catching diamond filled jewelries. This is also how he got his unofficial middle name “money” for himself.
Both men can be considered legends and pioneers in their respected sports with high profile personalities on social media. But having them fight each other is definitely not something you will see everyday. As combat sports, MMA and boxing is extremely different in nature with different fighting techniques and strategy emphasis.
Conor McGregor knows that MMA and boxing is different better than anyone else, but he still made the call. He started calling out Floyd Mayfeather after his fights and on social media. After a while, Floyd Mayfeather started to respond to these talks. With the help of social media, the beef between the two men spread like wild fire and it became a huge topic of interest.
Seeing this as a huge business opportunity, UFC’s president Dana White soon started to help promote this fight and support Conor McGregor. And after a series of back and forth negotiating, the fight was finally confirmed.
People had always compared legends from different fields of sports, but who knew that a fight like this would actually happen. Three critical things that made this fight happen are: 1. Conor McGregor’s notorious personality that is perfect for headlines 2. The support from UFC and other sponsors 3. The power of social media.
HOW SOCIAL MEDIA PLAYED A HUGE PART IN THIS FIGHT
I would seriously argue that Conor McGregor would not be who he is today without the power of social media. Sure he is an extraordinary fighter, but he became the darling of UFC and one of the most famous UFC fighter through social media.
Conor McGregor have big talks, trash talks a lot, and is always doing the unexpected. But this personality has put him under the spotlight again and again by making headlines. Conor McGregor perfectly used the power of social media to market himself and to differentiate himself from all other fighters.
Social media sharing also took a really big part in making this fight happen. At first it was just a challenge, but through the boasting of fans and people shouting for it to happen, an opportunity was created. Conor McGregor took that opportunity and more than tripled what he’s worth.
Previously, the biggest paycheck he received from UFC was $1million. Now thanks to social media and the genius marketing of himself, he just got a $30~$100million paycheck from his boxing debut.
Sure, Conor McGregor lost the fight, but he got what he wanted. This fight was created directly through social media and it gave Conor McGregor his biggest paycheck to date, more fame in the combat sports industry, and a lot more fans and followers. Conor McGregor may have lost the fight, but he is definitely the winner of the night.
