Scooby Apocalypse #4: A Review

Story by Keith Giffen and Jim Lee
Art by Howard Porter
In the latest installment of Scooby Apocalypse we find the gang resting up in a ghost town after having just escaped the monster riddled concert grounds. While Fred and Shaggy take a rest we find Velma and Daphne on guard duty. The two start talking about what happened back at the lab and concert. Daphne continues to blame Velma for her involvement in potentially turning the world into monsters, while Velma explains that she wasn’t a part of this plan. While the two bicker we see, that the town is not a ghost town but that it’s denizens have been transformed into vampires.
Scooby detecting a strange odor goes to check out the smell. Instead of a tasty treat waiting for him, he finds a vampire crawling down a wall on his way to get Velma and Daphne. Scooby’s intervention gives them enough time to realize what’s going on and wake Fred and Shaggy. A small scuffle incurs, in which Shaggy sleeps through, and the gang manages to fend off the vampires and escape without injury.

The scene then cuts back to the facility where the incident started and we find a group of smart dogs patrolling through the chaos. Something has gone wrong with their system because the dogs seem unable to speak and are communicating using their head-set hologram emotes. There is one dog among the pack that is capable of speaking and he is quick to take charge despite being only a puppy. This small dog seems to be hell bent on trying to get away from the facility and finding Scooby-Doo. They don’t say what Scooby has done to the small dog, but he does reveal that his name is Scrappy-Doo.
This issue went by kind of quicker than most because there is a spread during the vampire fight, where there are several pages of action happening with little dialogue in them, but overall the comic maintained a solid story. I don’t know what the plans are with Scrappy, but I do know that a lot of people dislike the character. I’ll be interesting to see where Jim Lee’s writing will take this character and whether or not Scrappy’s going to be against Scooby the whole time. With only three issues left it’s not likely there will be a team up but who knows what the long term plan is? There haven’t been any hints from Jim Lee or DC regarding a continuation of the story past issue 7, so we’re just left to play the waiting game, and see how things pan out.
