The importance of 1% probability

Certain things fell so upon you, in the end you only find them hilarious.

Friday evening, weekend was in its infancy. I just shut down my screen and packed my bag for a hurried exit from the office. Took my bullet and crusaded to my flat. Usually, my friend Subrata Kar, Creative Head at OSSCube and I go along and we stop by for some soft drinks (only soft) and our delicious delight honey chilli potato. But on that day he was on leave. So, no honey chilli potato, I just went straight away to my pad.

Weekend time, no enjoying activity, not my way! I went straight to a resto-bar for some food. Ordered my favorite food and enjoyed it with some soothing music for 20 mins. Paid the bill and headed straight to my flat.

Parked my bike, took the stairs and thinking about which movie I am gonna see tonight. Murmuring song, reached for the door in a very delightful mood.

Pulled the front door, and reached out to my pocket to pull the lock key out. No key in the pocket! Eyebrows raised! Then, explored my bag, but no key again and mood all changed. Explosion in the mind.

All good fun at resto and the idea of a movie just choked. Shit man!!!

Before I go with the story further… here is a Lil background.

I stay with my friend, he generally goes out-of-station on weekends. In the rarest of rare, he stays in the flat on weekends. In fact, we hardly see each others.

Now back to the story, so, obviously, I was sure he will not be in and around the flat. Never bothered to call him, and ask ‘are you here or out-of-station???’

So, what option I was left with… either break the lock, which was not possible at this time of the night! or went back to office bring the key. Opted the later choice, and it was almost half past nine.

Lucky, no traffic, so rushed to the office very easily. Reached to my workstation and took the key from the drawer. Pranab Das with Arinder (PMOs at OSSCube) at the reception. You, so late today that is also on weekend, Das sir said. I didn’t tell them what exactly the story of coming office was. He, as always, poked fun at me, and which brand you got today. I just smiled, and said bye, and went downstairs.

Started my bike, and crusaded at the speed of 60 KMPH. It was already 10 past now. After 5 mins driving, just realized my bike was fumbling. I said it’s okay, gotta turn on the reserve. Again surprise, it was already on reserve (a Lil secret here, my bullet’s fuel meter gauge is out of work for the last couple of months :D).

Holy shit, who did this, I don’t know. The whole weekend, I did not even realize it was running on the reserve. Anyway, almost out of petrol, on the main road. Ultimately, the bike came to stand still. I’ve the idea that petrol pump is half a kilometer away. But the big problem was, almost every petrol pump shuts down around 10:30 in UP. So race against both time and petrol.

No option but to just take the risk. So, turned on the choke, started the bike, and accelerated as much as I can. But no use, two autowala’s in between road, that made me slow my bike and I did. Passing few meters, again stopped. This time all empty.

But little respite, destination was in sight. So did some muscle exercise. Finally reached…
But was wondering… do I’ve enough money for petrol??? Just kidding, luck can’t be so unfair every time.

Took the petrol, went happily to my flat. Again parked, went upstairs and took the key out of my pocket.

What I saw? F#$ing biggest surprise of this whole shit. No lock on the main door. I was hardly breathing, wondered who else can be inside beside me. And my friend is, of course, on weekends.

I pulled the door, shook my head.

You… oh man!

The first thought came into my mind… I should have called my roommate.

Of course, it was my roommate who generally doesn’t stay on weekends. When I came first, he had gone to market.

Life just cracked a cruel joke on me!

But we live in life with probability. Even if, an event has a 0.1 percent chance of happening, it still should be kept in mind. But, that’s how we live. On chances, risks and adventure.

But a good lesson learned!
