The “Smugglers Cove”, Zakynthos, Greece is Amazingly Pretty!

Its our Calgary Travel Agency ‘s top favorite destination when visiting Greece. Where is your favorite beach? Comment below and let us know!

The “Smugglers Cove”, on the coast of Zakynthos, more tradtionally known as Navagio Beach or Shipwreck Beach, is an exposed cove in the Ionian Islands of Greece.

It is undoubtedly the most beautiful beach of Zakynthos and one of most photographed beaches in all of Greece. The waters around this cove often have an electric light blue color because of the numerous sulphur caves around the beach. High tides and turbulent waters often mix up the sulphur from the caves into the waters.

This beach was originally known as Agios Georgios until 2 October 1980. On that day a freightliner, the MV Panagiotis, ran aground in the waters around Zakynthos Island on Navagio Beach due to turbulent waters and bad visibility.

Rumor has it that the ship was smuggling contraband and hence the nickname “Smugglers Cove”. No official or circumstantial evidence existed to confirm this, and the captain was not convicted for such offenses. The ship was abandoned and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach. Hence also the nickname “Shipwreck”.

The beach was briefly closed in 2018, and swimming and boat anchoring were forbidden, after a cliff collapse over the beach dropped a large amount of rock. The beach has since reopened with some restrictions around anchoring.

How to Get to the Smugglers Cove:

Bus to Zakynthos Town and a boat to Navagio:
Once you arrive in Zante town you just walk downhill to the port. KTEL station in Zante town is located on top of the hill. It’s not hard to reach the harbor, just keep going down to the sea — its a pleasant and non-tiring 15-minute walk to the port where you can hop on a boat tour to Blue Caves and Navagio.

We suggest visiting Smugglers Cove in the morning since as the afternoon sea tends to be rougher and may cause problems to get back. — typical of most islands and surrounding ocean currents.

Shoot us an DM and lets get you going to visit the Smugglers Cove!
