The beginning to Data Sciences

Greetings!

Let me first introduce myself to you, I am Supreeth, a graduate from National Institute of Technology, Warangal (NIT-W) in Civil Engineering, class of 2015. This is my first blog and I am going to write about how I was inspired to embark on a journey to become a Data Scientist and about my understanding of Data Sciences . You might as well think, how much a civil engineer would know about Data Sciences! I would request you to hold on to your judgement until you reach the bottom of this post.

Alumni play an important role in influencing career path for most of their successors who are still in college and my case was no different. In my final year, I was introduced to Data Sciences by my senior Phani Srikanth. I still remember the interesting conversation(few mentioned below) about it, which gave me a direction to build my future plans and hence, I decided to become a Data Scientist the very next day.

“Amount of Data gathered by various organisations in different industries is increasing exponentially and the data storage has become efficient. This enormous amount of data when interpreted with a meaningful process turns out to be a tool so beneficial that it can help companies take important decisions to grow effectively and efficiently.”
“ Nate Silver, the founder and editor in chief of ‘FiveThirtyEight’, predicted US elections of 2012 using Data Sciences with high accuracy.” Check the link here.
“Germany was the world champion of FIFA worldcup 2014. Player style analysis done by Data scientists enhanced their chances of winning and their skill on the ball.” check the link here.

You’ve probably read numerous articles telling you ‘Why data science?’. They tell you that there is a paucity for good data scientists who can actually add value to the organizations and they also tell you that being a data scientist is the sexiest job of the 21st century. In my opinion, ‘What is data science?’ is an important question to ask than ‘Why data science?’, because I believe, the interest in any subject will make you work avidly to achieve anything you seek.

  1. What is Data Science?

Data Science is an interdisciplinary field, where large amounts of raw data (structured and unstructured) is transformed into information to identify patterns that can increase the organization’s competitive advantage.

2. Who is a Data Scientist?

A data scientist is someone who is better at statistics than any software engineer and better at software engineering than any statistician.

3. Who can be a Data Scientist?

To be a successful Data Scientist, one should have the following basic requirements:

a. Love for numbers.

b. Intellectual Curiosity

c. Communication Skills

In addition to the ones mentioned above, on the technical side, one should gain expertise in programming languages like R, Python, SAS, knowledge of SQL database, Machine Learning, Hadoop platform etc, however, to learn the aforementioned, one necessarily need not possess any relevant background, can start from the scratch and succeed.

4. Where to start?

I picked up a few Massive Open Online courses (MOOCs) available on various educational sites like www.coursera.org , www.edx.org , www.udacity.com and I found them extremely helpful. There are lots of other platforms offering similar learning. I will provide the information on what worked for me in my future posts and where to start.

Watch this space for more as I post my learning in this wonderful field of science. :D
