A Coursera Interaction Design Capstone Project

Target audience: Parents, grandparents, guardians, teenagers and youth.

Design Problem

Based on “Change” Facilitating communication between teens and parents. Communication between parents and teenagers should be clear and reliable, keeping in touch and understanding each other can be easy and joyful.

Imagine a mom trying to reach her son to ask him if he has picked up his sister from dance class. The teen is busy talking with friends, he sees the mom’s call coming in but he ignores it. The mom is frustrated how can she get him to answer the phone…

Ideation

The app is based on positive reinforcement and the reward system. Teenagers are encouraged to communicate with their parent through different communication tools for example Phone call, Texting, Instagram, etc. each has a set point value. The teen earns those points every time they reply to their parent. The teen and parent together create a list of rewards and associate a number of points to each. Once all the rules are set it’s up to the teen to earn points. After accumulating a number of points the teen can redeem them through the app, the app sends an email to the parent requesting fulfillment. Every time the teen replies to the parent the app applies points as set by the rules.

Design Evolution

User Test

Regardless of the various user testing conducted whether it was in-person testers or online tester thru UserTesting.com, the general feedback was positive ant that it’s very easy to understand and to navigate; good product to use to help reward kids, interface is simple and straight forward. It was an interesting experience for me to watch the online testing videos and to receive testers feedback. It allowed me to go back and make some improvements.
