How do we connect to our soul? How do we appreciate that part of us that is beyond our comprehension?

This is not a New Age or religious piece, but rather a conversation about the creative process and how it effects our souls. I’m going to use definitions that resonate with me from www.dictionary.com to clarify the words: creativity, soul, and spark. My purpose is to show how creativity is our soul’s spark, and to create a discourse with you, the reader. I invite you to share your creative experiences so you can receive feedback from me and the Medium community. As you read this I hope you have “ah ha!” moments where you connect the dots to when you really were using your soul’s spark to create your art.

creativity

noun: the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination.

This definition speaks to me because, when I think of creativity, it’s a process of “transcending traditional ideas. . . to create new” ones. We are not mimicking or copying someone else. These are “meaningful new ideas, forms, methods or interpretations”.

We’re using our gifts to bring something new into the world through your own imagination.“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” Albert Einstein

Right now I’m listening to Gene Wilder sing “Pure Imagination” in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” As of this writing, the original 1971 movie is streaming on Amazon Prime until February 1st in America. If you’re feeling stuck, or want to watch a great movie, I highly recommend watching it. You may also enjoy the book by Roald Dahl.

“There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there you’ll be free if you truly wish to be.’

“Pure Imagination.” ~Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

soul

noun: the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part.

I chose the photo above as my image for the soul not because it has anything to do with Buddhism, but because all these meditative figures represent the many aspects of who we inherently are; this is our soul. These aspects are part of the creative process we can’t put our finger on, yet we’re always connected to. We are multi dimensional beings who are here to share our creativity with the world.

When we consciously connect with our soul through our creativity we illuminate not only ourselves but the world around us.

The highest form of meditation is when we embrace ourselves in the moment and allow ourselves to channel our creativity freely. This is creating art. Art does not have to be on the physical. It can be a level of consciousness. Why? Because we are constantly creating new ideas. And it is when we are in the moment of awareness living our life having a new idea that that idea becomes one with the moment we are in.

Is art something we can touch? Or is it something that touches us? Or is it both?

I believe it’s both because I believe art is the highest form of communication. In order to communicate we need a giver and a receiver. I also see art as a mirror. We see aspects of our soul through art. And I believe most of the time we’re not aware of it. We’re not aware of it because most of the time we don’t know how to be aware of it.

I hope that reading this story gives you the opportunity to retrieve your own key to a part of yourself you may not have thought about. You own your own process. I invite you to take your key to open up your inner vault.

spark

noun: anything that activates or stimulates; inspiration or catalyst.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is staying an artist when he grows up.”
— — Pablo Picasso

When children play it’s an organic part of who they are. They are on autopilot with their soul because their focus is on having fun.

We need to get back to having fun by playing with our creativity. We need to play with our ideas and watch them grow just like a child takes different toys and creates a brand new world for them to thrive in. They use trains, tinker toys, legos, action figures, dolls, flashlights, drawings, sound effects, pillows, blocks and everything they can get their little hands on to create a space for themselves to completely engage in.

Playing with an idea forms a framework for us to create from. This is the place where we can be free to let our imaginations lead us. We need to embrace our inner child to thrive here. We need to give ourselves permission to have a good time, to have fun, to not be perfect. To become aware that flaws often provide a way of seeing how the structure we thought we were working with wasn’t organic. It was forced.

We smudged our piece so it would set our art free. Really think about that. Our spark is that part of us that ignites our soul when we get excited. It’s our essence in action.

We are acting as a catalyst for changing the world when we create even when we aren’t intentionally doing it. We don’t have to actively attempt to do this. It inherently happens when we are being true to who we truly are.

By sharing our creative projects we are putting our soul’s spark out into the world to make it a brighter place for everyone.
