Being Sick As A Spoonie, & What That Means

What’s up, friends?

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere you might just be getting blasted with windchill, weather changes, and … ahem… some kind of pesky or downright aggravating illness.

Getting sick in the winter is a tale as old as time. And my Nyquil bottle hath runneth empty.

Getting sick, no matter who you are, or what your occupation… downright sucks. Please see Being Sick Sucks for more lamentation. But Spoonies (disabled or not), may experience the brunt of it, with long-lasting recovery times, and contraindications with all of the other autoimmune things going on.

So what is a Spoonie??

Spoonie is an endearing term that comes from Spoon Theory*(Link to Wiki Page) which states:

“The spoon theory[a] is a metaphor describing the amount of physical and/or mental energy that a person has available for daily activities and tasks, and how it can become limited. It was coined by U.S. writer and blogger Christine Miserandino in 2003 as a way to express how it felt to have lupus; explaining the viewpoint in a diner, she gave her friend a handful of spoons and described them as units of energy to be spent performing everyday actions, representing how chronic illness forced her to plan out days and actions in advance so as to not…
