Alright, buckle up! The job landscape is rapidly changing, and if you want your skills to be up to par with these challenges, here’s what you need to know. First, the Baby Boomers have been steadily making their exit — retirement rates went from a chill 1.5 million in 2019 to a staggering 3.2 million in 2020. What that means for the workforce is still a bit of a mystery, especially with the lingering effects of the COVID rollercoaster.

And what else is new? Artificial intelligence is stealing the spotlight and bringing some serious changes to the skill sets employers seek. But wait a minute, it’s not all doom and gloom. Recent reports suggest that AI won’t steal everyone’s jobs, contrary to popular belief, but will create new job opportunities that let us collaborate with technology in ways we never imagined.

But only some are ready for this skills upgrade. Even with AI’s exciting opportunities, there’s a notable skills gap between what companies need and what the American workforce is prepared to deliver. Demand for technical skills is ramping up, and it’s time for you to step up your game if you want to keep up and not be left in the dust!

Gone are the days when employers were looking for basic computer skills and the ability to navigate the Internet! Now, employers need employees who can navigate the emerging digital tools that AI is rolling out. Are you ready to hop on the tech express? It’s moving fast — are you up for the trip?
Here’s some good advice if you are anxious about the shifting landscape. First, be adaptable and ready to learn- this will be crucial to your viability in this emerging new world of work. Next, being proactive in increasing your know-how regarding technology will not only keep you competitive but also give you ammunition in your quest for higher-paying and more interesting work.

Take advantage of all the free or low-cost venues for training, such as YouTube, LinkedIn, or Udemy. Don’t forget to keep your employer in the loop with all your skill upgrades, and keep that resume updated- you never know what might come your way! With your new confidence and insight into technological advances, seek out any work opportunities to apply what you learned. Using what you know is always the best way to help those new skills “stick.”

You can also check if your employer offers mentorship or training opportunities that might benefit you. Many employers now offer continuing education opportunities you might need to learn about. Not only will you save yourself from a hefty tuition bill resulting from a more traditional educational route, but you will also undoubtedly stand out as someone who is eager to learn and is, therefore, promotable.

Although it may seem like an overwhelming task to try to upskill yourself, this will not only decrease the chance that you will be laid off- that dreaded scenario facing many in recent months- you will also increase the likelihood of moving up within your organization, or even make a move to a higher paying position at a competing company.

Long story short- Your increased efforts will surely pay off in the long run, whether you stay in your current role at your place of employment or move on to bigger and better things!
