Thank you for writing this, PAX. It’s a struggle getting vegans to acknowledge what a racist, misogynistic, fat shaming, transphobic, xenophobic, and otherwise oppressive movement is the white mainstream vegan movement. It is bad for oppressed people and bad for the animals. It is not activism — it is anti-activism, considering how regressive and counter-productive it is. It has left a lot of use feeling alienated from a movement that should feel like community.

While I wish that non-vegans (especially those active in other social justice movements) would be willing to see the disconnect between the vegan message (of universal justice) and veganism as it is practiced by the mainstream movement, and not conflate the message with the [VERY] flawed messenger, very few will.

While other social justice movements are making alliances with other movements, thereby strengthening their message and broadening its appeal, the vegan movement actively alienates other social justice movements. It is a recipe for disaster. The animals deserve a better movement.
