Where there is a big need in the industry is in remodeling older buildings. There is more skill involved in it because it generally involves marrying new materials and building techniques to earlier ones. If one is good at it, one does it with respect for the original builders and the original design. If one is bad at it, one says, “This has to go. It’s old.” If one is good at it, one knows the difference between something that is off a little because of the building settling and something that is off a little because something is collapsing. Yes, there’s a difference. One learns to measure from the center. One learns that squares and levels exist only to piss you off. If one is good at it, one remodels a Federal house in the Federal style, a Victorian house in a Victorian style. If one is bad at it, it all gets done in mid century modern, no matter the original style.
The world needs people with these skills. Those of us who have them are aging and we will need replacements.
