The Struggle of Art

It feels like this.

Many artists/writers struggle with the idea of “selling out” their art, and I think that concept is horribly flawed. (My previous post was a pushback against that idea). But every artist needs to struggle with a whole range of things — ideas about art and commerce, the emotional costs of fiction, the purpose you’re serving with your stories, the incredible power of story and whether you’re wielding it righteously, and how to define success. (And those are just a few!)

But the art is the struggle, so none of that effort is wasted.

“When does it start to get easier?” the newbie author asks me.
“Never. It will always be hard,” I say. “If you’re doing it right.”
