This is an old article by internet standards, but I wanted follow up on my post. What seemed like a short-sighted, poorly planned protest at first has unfortunately become more poignant in spite of my misgivings about its efficacy. Sadly the benefit now greatly outweighs the cost. The state of race relations hasn’t worsened, but the overlap of the protest and the most grotesque examples of racial prejudice allows me to think about it more freely. I still don’t think that protesting during the anthem is the best answer, but if it brings focus to the issue and solidarity among Americans of all races and creeds, then so be it.
