The way I dealt with it, Martine, was by becoming really clear about where it was coming from. It was so bound up with the expectations of other people and my own perfectionism. When I realised that both of those had been major contributory factors in my burnout, in order to ensure I did not repeat the pattern of overworking again, I made a conscious decision to let them go. That is not to say they never rear their heads again, but when they do, I remember where they led me and I am grateful that, having gone through such a severe burnout and a process of self-examination in order to recover and stay well, I know that I have the tools to live and work in a different way now, without guilt or exhaustion.
