The transmission housing is the outer portion of the gearbox and is typically constructed out of steel or aluminum. The main function of an automotive transmission gear is to control the movement of an object, such as a belt that is turning. There are also four-wheel drive transmissions, which have bevel gears in each of the four wheels. Several different output shafts may be used in these transmissions, including the main output shaft, a reverse output shaft, and an emergency output shaft.
