This equipment is also used during hypoglycemia situations. It is a user friendly equipment which having low cost and is widely used during treatment.

How to use :

A small drop of blood obtained by pricking the skin using a needle is placed on a test strip and this strip is dipped into the glucose meter to know the readings.

Types of meters :

1) Hospital glucose meters

2) Non invasive meters

3) Continous glucose monitors

1) Hospital glucose meters

For multi patient hospital use, special glucose meters are used. These will provides more accurate and quality control records. Their data handling efficiency are designed to transfer glucose results into electronic medical records and for billing purpose to the laboratory computer systems.

2) Non invasive meters

This products are approved once by FDA, based on a electrically pulling glucose through skin. But later it was withdrawn due to the poor performance and damage occured to the skin.

3) Continous glucose monitors

It is operated using a disposable sensor placed under the skin, a transmitter is connected to the sensor and have a reader that receives and displays the measurement. The sensor is needed to be replaced but can be used several times. The device provides real time measurements. Drawback of this devices is accuracy is less because they read the glucose level in the interstitial fluid.

Accuracy :

Blood glucose meters should meet accuracy standards set by ISO (International organisation of standardisation). There are many factors affect the accuracy of different meters. Some of them are ;

a) Caliberation of meters

b) Ambient temperatre

c) Pressure used to wipe off the strip if applicable

d) quality and size of blood sample
