Hi Kayla. Just wanted to say I admire your ability to stick to your guns in this situation. I must admit that your professors reaction isn’t unique in academia, and I’m beginning to feel like the adverse reactions to the Black Lives Matter movement is related. It seems to stem from a kind of defensiveness to equality, becoming a sort of silent “soft” racism. Like you said, they may not commit hate crimes, or use the n-word, but movements like Black Lives Matter become “reverse-racist”. They challenge the status quo, make people feel vulnerable, cause disruption to normalcy. Their normalcy.
Anyway, I wish I had your courage. I hope that I can instill that courage in my kids. Not just to face a misguided professor like you did, but to look within, question life-long assumptions, challenge their own world-views, which your professor was not capable of.
