History shows that politics and economics are the strongest forces of change in society — and, thinking aloud, I’d be interested to see if there is a link between the increase in alt-right popularity post-2008 and the sub-prime mortgage /market collapse. When the economy and national pride both take a beating, positions of privilege become threatened by earned advantage (education) and initiative. More women and POC are graduating university now than ever before, putting white males at a disadvantage. Fo those men who are drawn to the alt-right, equality, or open opportunity, feels like oppression to their previous privilege. And the feminist movement must be terrifying to those men who are used to their unearned privilege. The same must be true of the rise of BLM. Imagine if you were raised to believe that you would always have a secure place in the world based on your birthright of being male, and then women and POC come along and threaten to take it away…. And then there is the advent of Trump, an ethnic entrepreneur, who reinforces this anger and sense of unjustness on the largest political stage in the US (arguably the world), and encourages the might is right doctrine. (This has all been played out before.) The real question now is: how does the future unfold?
