Outreachy Starts Today!

This blog should now be showing up on various planets (Fedora, Outreachy, Fedora Design), which means I need to do an introduction.

Hi, I’m Suzanne. I’ve been working on getting myself into User Experience (UX) for about a year now, although I’ve been interested in smoothing the interface between people and technology for longer than that. Most recently, I spent a few years in a PhD program working with robots and investigating the kind of gestures that robots will most need to understand when conversing with people. When that turned out to not be a good program for me, I figured out that UX was the most interesting and relevant path forward.

My outreachy project is the UX of Fedora hubs, specifically that of regional hubs [1]. I’ve been working on it for a few months now with my mentor Mo Duffy. I’ve already done the competitive analysis, done initial research planning, and started interviewing Fedora ambassadors and community members. Some interviews remain, and I continue to try to schedule with and get in touch with the remaining 4 people.

I’m hoping to get those last few interviews done in the next two weeks, to stay on track for the original plan provided in the application. We shall see, since I’m having trouble getting replies back to my emails.

I’ve looked for patterns in the existing interviews, and there are definitely some emerging. I’d definitely prefer more interviews before I do much with those results, though. Three interviews isn’t really very much.

This seems like a decent introduction for now. Until later!

Previous, initial research.

Next, analysis is confusing.
