We talk (bitch) about the cost of travel constantly. I’m at a state university that reimburses according to approved rates, not what it actually costs. I ended up footing the bill for part of a research trip because the hotel was more than the approved rate. I had chosen it because it was walking distance to the archives, so I didn’t need a car — which they would have paid for had I stayed at a cheaper hotel that was farther away. Total cost would have been the same or more. Lots of other ludicrous rules and regulations.
