Is ‘Culture Shock’ Such a Relevant and Important Term in 2018? Explore How Culture

The advance of telecommunications has resulted in a globalized world, a breakdown of cultural barriers and a narrowing of the gap between countries. But it has also increased the regularity with which people move from one country to another for purposes of the study, employment and business opportunities. But the question arises: Do people still have trouble adapting to a new culture? It will then explain how much the well-known “culture shock” influences people in 2018.
It is necessary to say that culture shock “is the name given to many uncomfortable emotions and reactions that people experience when they move into a new culture that is very different from their own” (World Relief Durham). And even when the culture is not so different from theirs, there are many small distinctions that could make it difficult to adapt to a new environment, new rules, new food, and new people.
In fact, it has been known that people who experience a culture shock generally go through four stages, starting with the honeymoon stage, in which they experience initial happiness and euphoria for arriving in a new country; then, the stage of distress in which the great encounter with reality occurs; after that, comes the orientation stage, in which they begin the process of accepting what is new, learning and finding a balance; and finally the adaptation stage, in which the person begins to feel at home and returns to his or her usual mood, this is at best. Sometimes, in this last stage people end up returning to their country. And some others end up feeling even happier than they were in their own country (International Student Insurance).
Therefore, in 2018 the culture shock is even more present. Nowadays, more and more people are moving to a new country seeking new horizons. And even though the Internet seems to allow people to be better informed about a country before visiting it, the personal experience cannot yet be really simulated by any technology.
