Are You Comfortable Yet?

The history between whites and blacks are deeply rooted. Blacks went from being in slavery, to owing their own homes, businesses, and much more. Many Americans like to say that blacks are equal to whites now, which in some cases are true, but overall we are still oppressed. One logic that many people like to base their proposal off of is Barack Obama becoming the first African American president. Yes, this is all swell, but does Obama becoming president really change how whites and blacks interact with each other? Does this really mean that we settled our differences and can coincide with each other? No, there are still issues arising now as we speak that have to deal with white people and black people being in the presence of each other.

There is this trick that white people like to play where they make it seem as a if black people are the ones who instill fear in white people when really everyone has this tensed persona about being around the next race because of fear of judgement. As mentioned in the book, “Who’s Afraid Of Post Blackness,” many people who didn't grow up around white people will have a more challenging time adjusting to a new environment that contains majority of white people. Many blacks feel they have to prove their intelligence, or act more mature than they really are just because we live in a predominately white society. So, just because Obama was president, or blacks are aloud to vote now, does that really justify the reasoning behind why white people feel everyone can get along and be equal? Are you really that comfortable yet?
