Why does everyone always assume that a nation state needs to be either 100% capitalist or 100%…
Justin Walters

It gets old hearing from Grognards talking about “communism” and citing old stories about the glory days of the old Soviet Socialist Republic…

It’s almost like they think that word “Socialist” in the name of the country actually meant something. Like… do you think the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea is an honest name, too?

Or in the famous words of Inigo Montoya: “Socialism (and/or Communism). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

One thing’s for sure: it DOESN’T mean whatever the fuck it was they were doing in Russia for 70-odd years. It doesn’t mean whatever the fuck they’re doing in China or Cuba or Venezuela now, either. All of those things, in fact, are actually just uglier variants of capitalism in which monopoly power is invested in a small number of individuals who also happened to capture complete political power, but who successfully propagandized their various coups and systems as Socialism or Communism.

In fact: not really substantially dissimilar to what Republicans are doing in the United States now. Except they’re still calling what they’re doing Capitalism. It’s the only thing Republicans aren’t lying about.
