How we plan to change the fast food game

Over the past 13 years, we’ve worked hard not just to stand for what we believe in, but eat it too. We let our values guide our actions and surround ourselves with people who do the same.

One person who embodies this ideal is Naomi Osaka. And as a longtime sweetgreen fan (and regular orderer), we couldn’t be prouder to have her in our corner as our newest — and youngest — investor.

Our goal in partnering together is a big one: to change the way brands and athletes speak to future generations about the importance of what they eat…

Since day one at sweetgreen, we’ve been dedicated to leading with purpose and making sustainable decisions that last longer than we will. Today, we are proud to strengthen this mission with our commitment to becoming Carbon Neutral by 2027. The six-year plan of attack: Reducing our carbon by 50% and meaningfully offsetting where reduction isn’t yet possible.

We believe that climate change is the defining challenge of our generation, posing a real and systemic threat to the health of people and the planet. …

At sweetgreen, we know there’s nothing quite like the satisfying crunch of cabbage. So naturally, our arugula scientists were drawn to the internet’s (occasionally bizarre) obsession with all things crispy. We’re talking: the fried chicken sandwich that sold out in seconds, this viral ASMR YouTube video, and Oxford professor John S. Allen’s poetic assertion that “crispy is king because it offers a multi-sensory experience — sight, taste, feel, and especially sound, piled together like a tin roof sensory sundae.”

Our culinary team was intrigued. And more determined than ever to unleash the lettuce on this deep fried phenomenon. On a…

To our sweetgreen guests,

To say the least, what a year. No one could have predicted we’d be writing this letter from home in December. As we approach the end of 2020, we’ve been reflecting on the past twelve months. Above all, we’re beyond grateful for your support in continuing our mission — to build healthier communities by connecting people to real food. Together, we’ve accomplished so much, and we’re proud to share a few highlights:

  • Pivoted our Outpost Program, and teamed up with Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen to provide nearly 400,000 bowls to healthcare heroes on the…

Feeling right at home in Miami

Today, we open our first restaurant Coral Gables, Miami — and we couldn’t be more excited.

As we join the Miami community, it has never been more important that we make decisions where the customer, the community, and the company all win. It’s why we spent over two years immersing ourselves in the community to ensure we’re entering the market in a thoughtful way. …

Empowering our team to get out the vote

Earlier this year, we made a commitment to create sustainable change at sweetgreen, including supporting our team’s ability to vote. According to RRTV, the restaurant industry employs more than 11 million people. Imagine the impact that could be made at the polls if all 11 million of those employees had the tools, knowledge, and time to vote this fall.

In the 2016 Presidential Elections, over 100 million Americans did not vote with 35% citing that voting conflicted with work or school. …

Sweetgreen Co-Founder and CEO Jonathan Neman shared the following note with employees on Wednesday, October 21st.

During our virtual Town Halls over these past 7 months, my goal has been to be as transparent as possible about all parts of the business, and today, I have hard news to share.

We have moved forward with reorganizing and restructuring our team so we can put our company on a stronger and more focused path to profitable growth. This will mean different things for different people — some roles will evolve, some departments will remain the same and unfortunately, some roles will…

TLDR: This post is not about salad. As you’re about to learn, sweetgreen is launching Plates, a brand new menu that’s all about dinner.

Like all restaurants, sweetgreen has been profoundly impacted by COVID-19. As we write this, our day-to-day operations look completely different from where they were just a month ago. Not only have our restaurants transitioned to pick up-and-delivery only, but this pandemic has tested our company, our values, and how we connect people to real food. It has also provided us with a unique opportunity to ask ourselves, “If we were starting sweetgreen today, what would it…

To our sweetgreen community,

Over the past few weeks, you’ve likely seen news surrounding the SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). We wanted to share why sweetgreen applied for the loan, and why we decided to return it.

At the end of last week, we were approved for a $10M loan through the program. That same day, we learned that the money had run out and so many small businesses and friends in the industry who needed it most did not receive any funds. Knowing that, we quickly made the decision to return the loan.

Like all restaurants, sweetgreen’s revenue has…

At sweetgreen, we believe in leaving people better than we found them. That goes for the planet too.

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Atlantic Sea Farms, the first commercial seaweed farm in the United States, to create the Tingly Sweet Potato + Kelp Bowl with renowned chef and friend, David Chang.

In a world where climate change poses many challenges for farmers, the need for regenerative food systems has never been more important. That’s why we’re proud to serve kelp on our menu. This nutritious, delicious seaweed is regenerative to the ecosystem, helping to remove carbon from the ocean and atmosphere. …
