FORESIGHT(2023): Summer Internship at Honeywell | Tanmay Vaghale |
1) Brief Introduction
My name is Tanmay Vaghale, and I am a final-year student from the Department of Chemical Engineering enrolled in its dual degree course. I got an internship offer at Honeywell for the SDE role in the CDC internship drive in 2022.
2) How did you get into Honeywell? What was the selection procedure?
The selection procedure consisted of an online coding round followed by a technical and HR interview. This year, Honeywell had separate tests for SDE and Data profile. There were three coding questions for the SDE profile. The questions were of medium difficulty.
The first interview round started with a few basic questions like Are you familiar with AWS or Azure? Are you proficient in Java? After such questions, the interviewer asked me to explain the first project on my CV. Then they asked some questions like what was the motivation behind that project? What were the challenges you faced, and how you overcame them? The first round lasted for forty-eight minutes.
The second round was the HR round. It was a short round of about ten to fifteen minutes, and they asked the standard HR questions like what do you expect from this internship? What are your strengths/weaknesses? Etc.
3) How to prepare for them?
- For clearing the coding round, practice medium-level questions on any standard coding platform like leetcode. If you are familiar with standard techniques, this round will be easier.
- Be very well prepared with your CV. Major partof my technical round revolved around one particular project from my CV. Before the interview, list possible questions someone may ask after reading your CV and prepare their answers.
- Ask a friend to take a mock interview. This will help a lot to boost your confidence.
- Prepare some HR questions before the HR round. Make sure that your answers are consistent in the HR round.
4) What difficulties did you face while preparing for this Company/Profile? How did you overcome this problem
I faced some problems in DSA. To tackle this problem, solving medium to hard-level questions regularly is the key. Once you know how to apply the standard techniques, you will become more confident.
Preparing the CV was also a challenging part. I spent many hours thinking about what questions could be asked on my different projects and preparing their answers. For the HR part, I referred to some online articles, which were enough to get an idea about the HR questions and prepare their answers.
5) According to you, who should ideally apply for this job?
Someone who is interested in coding or development should apply for this role.
6) Any specific advice you want to give to the junta sitting for internships this year
- Prepare your CV thoroughly. Find the possible loopholes in your CV and resolve them.
- Keep practising DSA questions regularly, especially DP and Graphs. Even if you solve fewer problems on certain days, it is fine if those problems are challenging.
- Have your CV reviewed by seniors and friends before finalising it. It is a great way to avoid mistakes in your CV.
- Give a few mock interviews with your friends. It will help a lot to handle the pressure and boost confidence.
- Refrain from panicking if you don’t receive a call for the second round soon after the first round ends. In my case, I have to wait for six hours for the HR round. Have faith and keep calm in such situations.
- Focus on the learnings from the experience of any test/interview and not on the outcomes. Do not let your confidence down because of a few tests. There are many opportunities in the internship drive.
