SwiftScale Selections — a monthly feature of 5 fast-growth, enterprise tech startups doing good stuff in a particular vertical.

In the last few months we’ve explored exciting Data, Talent Acquisition, Customer Insight and LegalTech companies. For our 5th edition we’re taking a look at Cyber Security…

The 5 scaleups we’ve chosen are:

  1. TessianHuman Layer Security for email

UK-based, 2013 founded, $58.8M raised, 100 employees

Where’s the good stuff?

They raised $42m in a Series B round led by Sequoia Capital in February of this year. Achieved 500% revenue growth in 2018, and have won a plethora of awards including the IT Security Provider of the Year at the 2018 British Legal Technology Awards.

What do they do?

Tessian’s technology uses machine learning to eliminate the huge security vulnerabilities surrounding enterprise email, including spear phishing and misdirected emails. The platform analyses email data in order to understand the context of human relationships and communication. By knowing what normal email activity looks like, it can automatically detect any anomalies that may imply a security threat.

2. XMCyberSimulate, validate and remediate attack paths to critical assets

Israel-based, 2016 founded, $32M raised, 45 employees

Where’s the good stuff?

Raised $22m of Series A funding in November ’18 from 5 investors, including Macquarie Capital and UST Global. They were awarded the title of ‘Technology Pioneer’ by the World Economic Forum in 2018 and have caught the attention of the German Armed Forces who are seeking to partner with them.

What do they do?

XM Cyber provides the first fully-automated Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) simulator to continuously expose attack vectors, above and below the surface, from breach point to any organisational critical asset.

The platform leverages an array of offensive methods to expose a network’s blind spots and autonomously recommends ways in which they might be fixed. It effectively performs the role of so-called red teams, corporate hackers hired to find system exploits and vulnerabilities.

3. SenseonSensory AI for cyber security

UK-based, 2017 founded, $6.4M raised, 35 employees

Where’s the good stuff?

Raised $6.4M in Seed funding in February this year, led by MMC Ventures. They were named ‘Hot Company — Cybersecurity AI 2019’ by Cyber Defense Media Group.

What do they do?

Senseon is the next phase of AI for cyber defence, moving beyond rules-based systems ineffective at differentiating between unusual behaviour and malicious threats. The platform understands and correlates data across the entire digital estate, including endpoints, the network, cloud services and Investigator Bots to build a complete picture of threats.

Senseon’s unique ‘AI Triangulation’ prioritises and surfaces only malicious or highly suspicious activity, allowing security teams to focus on dealing with genuine threats.

UK-based, 2014 founded, £34.9M raised, 150 employees

Where’s the good stuff?

Raised a record-breaking $30M last year which was led by Dawn Capital in October 2018, which remains the largest injection of capital for a UK cyber security firm by wholly UK investors. The former President of Arm Holdings is a board member and they were recently cited as “one of the world’s most secure commercial internet browsing technologies”, by Trade Secretary, Liam Fox.

What do they do?

Garrison’s unique, hardware-based, isolation platform enables high-risk users to gain access to the internet without the hazard of inadvertently introducing malware or other risky content. The platform also prevents malicious loss of critical data. In essence Garrison’s ultra-secure browser is allowing customers across all sectors to re-enable full web access and safely click links.
