It’s misleading to make fat people think that “calories don’t matter.” They do. I count my calories every day. That’s why I wear the same size pants (31") that I did in college, even though I’m 54 years old (and weigh 150#).
Of course, you may feel better if your 2,000 calories/day is protein and fat and not much sugar or carbs, but that’s an optimization for later. If your overweight or obese your first goal is to stop being fat!
Fat people will just start eating more protein and fat and wonder why they’re still obese. Obesity is the biggest problem facing America and the world, and there’s a simple, free, solution with only one rule: count your calories accurately and eat less than your TDEE. This will always work to lose weight, even if you eat Twinkies for breakfast and a Big Mac for lunch.
You’re making things too complicated for fat people.
The reason why “cutting calories” doesn’t work is that fat people lie. They underreport what they eat and over report exercise. Everyone who claims they are “diet resistant” is not telling the truth. Study after study confirms this. See https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1454084 for example. The researchers in this highly-cited paper conclude:
In conclusion, all the obese subjects we studied who had a history of self-reported diet resistance had appropriate energy expenditure, but they misreported their actual food intake and physical activity.
