Clearly misses the point. Beyond it’s purpose as a currency bitcoin played a pivotal role in drawing attention to the benefits of blockchain tech. Article focuses entirely on the admittedly ludicrous amount of power that goes into mining bitcoin. The argument of profit without purpose is inherently flawed as the author cites no further exploration of multitude of tokens that have spun off / been inspired by / or created in response to bitcoin apart from a note that offers no perspective at the end of the article.

Blockchain is not some fad, it is here to stay. It gives us a means of transnational authentication without the need of intermediaries, sure it’s still raw but the developments are tangible and the future looks promising because of it. Here are just some examples of systems that is being built / been built on blockchain.

Everything from decentralized music distribution.
Gold backed currency.
Currency transfers without the need for intermediaries.
Organization registration and management without geographical boundaries.
The list is endless.

This is not a fad, without or without bitcoin, blockchain is the future and it is here to stay. Yes there will be a bubble, yes it will burst, we went through a .com bust in the 90s too, the internet is still here and it has massively improved our lives. Funny how we reject things we don’t understand.
