Home remedies for Prevention and Treatment of Influenza
Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses which circulate in all parts of the world. There are 4 types of influenza viruses, types A, B, C and D. Influenza A and B viruses circulate and cause seasonal epidemics of disease.
There are several home remedies that may help prevent or reduce the severity of influenza (commonly known as the flu). These remedies are not a substitute for medical treatment, and it is important to see a healthcare provider if you think you may have the flu. However, these remedies may help you feel better and speed up your recovery:
Get plenty of Rest:
Getting enough rest is important for your body to heal and recover. Try to get at least 7–8 hours of sleep each night.
Stay Hydrated:
Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, broth, and sports drinks, to help replace fluids lost due to fever, sweating, and other symptoms.
Use over-the-Counter Pain Relievers:
Over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil), can help reduce fever and relieve body aches and pain. Follow the instructions on the label carefully and do not exceed the recommended dosage.
Use a Humidifier:
A humidifier can help add moisture to the air, which may help alleviate congestion and coughing.
Soothe your throat:
Drink warm liquids, such as tea or broth, or use a saline nasal spray to help soothe a sore throat.
Eat Healthy Foods:
Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help boost your immune system and speed up your recovery.
Wash your Hands Frequently:
Proper hand hygiene is important to help prevent the spread of the flu. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after blowing your nose, sneezing, or coughing.
It’s also important to get a flu vaccine to help protect yourself from getting the flu. If you do get the flu, antiviral medications can help shorten the duration and severity of the illness. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about the best course of treatment for you.
