Title: Thorough, disturbing, and idiosyncratic

Review: The third in a series of investigations into subcultural occult culture, this book is bound to inspire controversy and respect in equal measure. The work on Crowley is thorough and, without diving into fundamentalist Christian moral indignation, points out what would happen if we simply took the famous occultist at his word. I imagine those familiar with the occult are the main audience of this book, so the sacred cow butchery might upset some — but it’s essential work if we are to understand the mechanisms of (counter)culture that drove us to our current location. The other half of the book, which revolves around the Fabian Society, is equally essential reading in that regard: just how fundamental this group has been to the development of the neoliberal state as we know it has not been adequately addressed elsewhere, save the work of a few scholars.
A disturbing and personal read. Not for the sensitive, necessarily, or perhaps especially necessary indeed for the sensitive. I don’t know. It shook me deeply.

Title: Required reading — Context for Abuse Culture

Review: For anyone struggling to gain a clearer perspective on the pervasiveness of child sexual abuse, it is imperative to grasp the inexorable unfolding of the Fabian agenda.
This little known (but massively influential) society has flavored almost any aspect of society that you care to examine. To finally have a glimpse from within the families, the political and business alliances, the ‘theological’ underpinnings of such a massively effective movement is enlightening and necessary to our understanding.
As someone who is attempting to make sense of her own past AND the context in which it occurred, I applaud Jasun’s unflinching courage when discussing his own history. He examines the complex and mysterious currents in which he was formed…the shifting sands of family life, the difficult internal landscape of a childhood bathed in ambiguity (moral, spiritual and political) and the careless, affectionate acceptance of family friends with a predilection for young boys. The passages that deal specifically with the bonds/breaches between Jasun and Sebastian are heartrending, yet full of dark hints at what may have been taking place, just off stage.
And this is the conundrum: one is left with so many questions…how deep DID these alliances run? What part does organized crime & ‘intelligence’ play in this agenda? How corrupting IS the trickle down effect we experience through popular culture? How great a role do occult practices play? Are ‘rituals’ merely psychological window dressing that allow perpetrators to invest child sexual abuse with a whiff of ‘spiritual virtue’? How deeply implicated are the ‘healing professions’ (such as psychiatry) with entrenched roots in the Tavistock Institute?
Growing up in the era of communes, relaxed ‘parenting’, and occult overtones to so much of what I have lived leaves me at sea in an ocean of questions…but of this, I am certain: it is important and crucial to examine the Crowley Mythos in detail, to dissect the actual phrasing of his work, and to acknowledge the profound and lasting effect that his ‘philosophy’ continues to exert on us, however far removed from it we may imagine ourselves to be. At last, someone has dared to begin this work, without resorting to merely moralistic condemnation.
The Vice of Kings ranks among the most insightful, difficult and perceptive examinations of the origins of our present culture that I have yet to encounter. There is much to ponder here, and I’m grateful.

Review: Jasun Horsely’s book The Vice of Kings: How Socialism, Occultism and the Sexual Revolution Engineered a Culture of Abuse unearths the charred landscape of social engineering, traumatic child abuse and occultism in British history. Horsley borrowed the title from occultist Aleister Crowley’s The Book of the Law, the full quote is “Compassion is the Vice of Kings.” An investigation into Crowley and his ties to horrific child abuse comprise the second half of the book.
Intended as a trilogy, Vice of Kings is the final book in the series written by Horsley, which also include Prisoner of Infinity: Social Engineering, UFO’s and the Psychology of Fragmentation and Seen and Not Seen: Confessions of a Movie Autist.
Horsley provides in Vice of Kings the personal and intellectual origins of Fabian social engineering ideas and objectives. He personalizes historical UK socialism (as well as it’s occult agendas) and analogizes the generational vices of his own family to the secretive vices of the UK thought leaders. Characteristic of his style, Horley shares personal reflections from his familial past which are helpful to the reader who may share some or all of the similar troubles of Horsley.
Horsley digs deep into the disturbing subject matter and succeeds in high def pixelation of the murky picture of the Vice of Kings subject, detailing the unofficial curriculum in schools and society of child sexual abuse, it’s traumatic effect, and the concomitant effect on society at large. Does the picture made incomplete by hidden data on child sexual abuse tell the full story? What is the effect of the infant’s cry of trauma that echos through the psychosphere of humanity? Horsley asks and answers these types of questions in The Vice of Kings. An excellent book! Read it!
