Technology watch summary
Technology watch is a way to continually learn and improve ourself as a developer. It’s a way to keep being informed on the last dev news.
Different ways to do the technology watch
I ranked different ways to do technology watch based on my preferences. There are of course other ways to be informed on new development topics.
- Medium : high quality articles, recommandation algorithm very accurate
- Daily.dev : a chrome extension, links to articles, very useful tool
- Youtube : almost everything is on Youtube, the difficult part is to find interesting videos
- Twitch : very fun to watch a coding session or a dev talk show
- Reading books : the best way to deeply learn new things
- Doing pet projects : also the best way to deeply understand new things
- Meetup & Conferences : clearly not on a daily basis, a good way to learn things
- Podcasts : difficult to be focus on a subject for me
- Twitter : I’m not using it
When to do our technology watch?
It depends on each individual. It could be done on a daily basis, when we have free time, or in a specific moment on the day (during daily transports to/from work) or even during weekends and holidays.
Why doing it?
Benefits
- Discover new technologies
- Continuous learning
- Personal development
- Optimize your career
Limitations
- Lack of time
- Difficult to target interesting subjects
- Self depreciation (we don’t know many things)
- No desire to do it
Technology watch is of course not mandatory to be a great developer, however it is something very valuable to continually improve ourself as a developer.
And you? Do you do some technology watch? What do you use? When? And Why don’t you do it (if not)?
