Back to School

by Annabelle

I dread going back to school

Wonder how things would go

Grades, tests, CCAs and friends

A portfolio made to show

I can’t wait for school to start

Looking through those memories

Of friends and laughter and fun

When it wasn’t just about studies

I dread going back to school

What stress would pile up high

And all the pressure to succeed

We build castles in the sky

I can’t wait for school to start

So much more to do

Projects, meetings, and homework

There’s no time to feel blue

I dread going back to school

To face a thousand faces

Letting them pass into the distance

Between my typed out spaces

I can’t wait for school to start

Fresh resolve and resolution

Then within myself a struggle

To grasp this evolution

I dread going back to school

When people get drunk on coffee

And sleep eludes some eyes

Compromising productivity

I can’t wait for school to start

Just to look forward to summer

When studying just overwhelms

And I feel a lot dumber

I dread going back to school

Dragging myself out of bed

And climbing the hill to the library

Holding up my head

This conflict ensues when school draws near

School could be great

But while I’m still recuperating

School can surely wait

About the writer: Hi, I am Annabelle, studying to be an engineer. As much as I find beauty in Mathematics, I find beauty in the written word. I enjoy writing and sharing my poetry and stories in an attempt to capture my imaginations and emotions. Penning down my thoughts also allow me to reflect on issues about society and life, and I hope to publish a book one day. My other interests include graphic design, playing the piano and harmonica, teaching, dancing and singing.
