To Each His Domain

To Each His Own is a well known adage — means one has the right to make his/her choice

Scenario

If you are a software engineer, and you happened to be in a random social event (maybe you went for a comedy show, maybe you went for a yoga class whatever), and you happen to run into a biomedical engineer — How do you think the conversation flows ? Sure you exchange pleasantries and then — you have to find common topics to exchange conversations on. Each of you might be expert in your own domain, but NOT so much across right ? Wouldn’t you wish to have a word cloud in your mind like the below ? At least you could use some keywords to ward off the awkward silence :)

Think of a recruiter/staffer who does NOT have depth of expertise in neither of the domains — yet has to help make a match between a job requirement and a job seeker in various domains. Increasingly that is the role expected by recruiting and staffing companies if you chose that role ( fungibility is expected in every job)

Give me a Spark

A common lament from a fresher / new graduate / newbie , who genuinely aspires to grow in career and continuously learn.

When you are new to a domain and you are willing to go through the mail room (aka. put in as much hard work and dedication by not saying no to any type of task handed to you), all you need is a spark. A spark that can light a fire in you and from there you own the baton to make it bigger and brighter.

At Symmetrics, we have come across many recruiters and staffers in the industry who are left to themselves confused and lost in the ocean of technologies with very little empathy from either employers or job seekers.

  • Employers push the recruiter to get them specialists fast — But how many hiring managers take time to explain the job description and correlated keywords
  • Job Seekers are not proven to have empathy towards recruiters either. How many of them reasonably pick the call during follow-ups and how many of them genuinely do NOT throw recruiters under the bus , when they get an alternate offer (in the middle of current interview process)

Sure, there are always reasons to not be empathetic from both sides (employers and job seekers) for e.g. arguing that they do NOT have enough time to explain requirements and set expectations. It is analogous to almost every blame story — Every one wants the system to change, but who is ready to chip in their contribution

Symmetrics to Empathize !

Symmetrics is a HR Tech Startup that empathizes with the daily life of recruiters and staffers.

The value of the platform is already explained in blog posts The Great Big Resignation and now this ! , Do you know your Job’s net worth and Things the smart do BEFORE accepting a new job offer

In this article we want to highlight some ways in which the product/platform provides a spark to all the growing recruiters/staffers (and pretty much any other newbie that is trying hard to get their foot in the door)

Job Family

Job Family is a grouping of similar jobs at one level. Also referred to as SOC (standard occupational code), a code the US govt. maintains for classification of jobs. It is also a database that lists tools, technologies collated under a job family. The database keeps changing frequently, hence Symmetrics organized it in a way that is queryable and consumable for non tech users.

In our previous scenario, the job family for software engineer and bioengineer are respectively

  • Software and Web Developers, Programmers and Testers
  • Bioengineers and Biomedical engineers

It is as easy as selecting a job family in the filter for the report [INF] JOB FAMILY TECHNOLOGIES and you have the the keywords to get you started. You can take the keywords and continue your online search for deeper information

There are two levels of looking at the keywords — Tools & Commodity

  • Commodity is another classification for Tools
  • Tools are more common words that tend to be used in job description(s)
  • Commodity and Tools have many-many relationship (i.e. one commodity can have many tools , and one tool can be classified under many commodities)
  • Regardless, the takeaway is each of them is a Keyword

Further, the report identifies which Tools are Hot Technology (making it time relevant)

Conclusion

There are at least 9000 tools and 130 commodities to search on (and so many other ways to classify that we provide to our clients)

Go search , may the spark be with you !
