Non-profit organizations are groups dedicated to furthering particular social advocacies. They play a huge and essential part in every community. Aside from the fact that nonprofits contribute to the economy of our local communities, nonprofits are groups that exist for a (universally) significant reason. That is, to help the world.

However, with its nature and system, nonprofits also struggle with certain challenges that are posed them in their journey to fight for their cause. According to a survey conducted by Guidestar, an information service specializing in reporting on over 2 million non profit organizations, the following are the top three greatest challenges of these groups:

Top 3: Spreading Awareness

Some types of programs organized by nonprofits are not very easy to publicize. Some programs may be about sensitive or underrated topics that make it hard to make the media interested in public releases.

In the same way, some nonprofits also lack the resources to hire Public Relations or Marketing staff who could focus on marketing strategies to disseminate information about these programs.

Many business experts say that some nonprofits are “training employees for their next employer”, which is sadly somehow in touch with reality.

Many nonprofits struggle with attracting highly-skilled workers and keeping them for the many years to come, given that there are limited resources allocated for these staffs. In fact, most members of nonprofit organizations are volunteers.

One advantage that nonprofits have though is that people who willingly choose to work for them are really committed and in the same page with the mission of the organization- to help the world.

Top 1: Raising Funds

Barbara Wetzler, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Florida expressed,

“We never lack for vision, ideas or enthusiasm. The challenge is always finding sufficient funds today to safeguard the agency’s financial vitality while working toward a progressive and stable future.”

According to the survey, the top 1 problem of nonprofits is finding enough money to continue working on their mission. Nonprofit organizations earn money from fundraising- raising money from individuals, grants, and philanthropies.

Most startup nonprofits are limited to seeking donations from individuals and special events. Few might secure government funding for certain programs, but this is rare.

All these are real- life struggles of nonprofit organizations. We might not realize it, but these are the same groups that, in one way or another, have continuously been exerting much effort to help the community and even ourselves.

Here at Symph, we care for every individual, every group that are especially geared towards making significant change in the world. That is why we support these groups, their causes, and come up with ways how we can help them.
