Honestly, it seems like older generations are more susceptible to fake internet crap. This isn’t to disrespect them in any way, it’s just the younger people grew up with the tech and developed a skill set to go with(although the tricks are always evolving). Older generations seem to be much more easily taken in by fake news sites that mimic the style and tone of real ones, just like they tend to be more easily drawn in by phishing scams of all stripes. 
The rules of how authority was established(in terms of media or expertise) for much of their life are now exploited to earn their trust, they also tend more to walled-garden behaviour sticking to facebook and a handful other destinations and only clicking through from things that appear in those spaces.
