As much as DACA has helped nearly a million childhood immigrant Americans, we need to do better. DACA was a band-aid fix to an unjust immigration policy, leaving kids who grew up here with the ability to obtain work permits with the promise of “deferred action” on deportation, but also left them with no future path forward.
We can do better. These Americans should have a voice in their communities. They should have a right to make choices on who represents them. They should have the right to vote. They deserve a path to citizenship, because they are as American as any of us.
It’s time for Congress to act and pass the DREAM Act (Senate Bill 1615), which would give our childhood immigrant Americans not only the protections of DACA, but a path to a something many of us take for granted — citizenship.
