Azerbaijan is ideally the Land of Fire. It is also the Land of Hospitality and beauty. In short, you can call it a Land of extremes. What makes Azerbaijan so beautiful is the that it has nine out of eleven climate classifications which treats every visitor like a King or a Queen. Nearly, some of the most beautiful landscapes can be found here because of its climate.

Azerbaijan was always considered a part of Russia. But, Azerbaijan is different. Azeri’s have their own customs, cultures and traditions that they follow. Nationalities like Georgians, Jews, Avars and Kurds as well as Russians that also contribute to the cultural mosaic of Azerbaijan. The official language of Azerbaijan is Azeri that belongs to the Turkic language group but Russian and English is also spoken widely across the country.

With everything so unique within the country, here are things you didn’t know about Azerbaijan:

1. AZERIS LOVES PANCAKES.

Kutabi, which are filled pancakes is the national dish of Azerbaijan. They are stuffed with pumpkins and will make you forget the taste of Nutella. Surprisingly, they are a part of every meal Azeris eat.

2. IT IS AN ANCIENT HOME.

There are a few caves in which archaeologists have found remains that date back to millions of years ago which is why we can call Azerbaijan as an ancient home.

3. COMPLICATED BORDERS.

Azerbaijan is filled with borders across the country. Being a landlocked country, Azerbaijan has a self-declared autonoumous region on its west, which is said to have epic mountain ranges and vineyards flourishing in its valleys.

4. AZERIS TAKE TEA WITH JAM.

If you’re a South Asian, you must be knowing the fact that we take butter and jam with bread. But in Azerbaijan, black teas are served with jams, lemon, mint or rosewater.

5. THERE’S NO WEDDING WITHOUT SUGAR.

Bizarre but Azeris decide the weddings according to the tea served in the trays. If the tea requires more sugar then there is more negotiation and if it’s sweet enough, the wedding is said to be on the cards.

6. HORSES ARE THE HEROES OF AZERBAIJAN

The Karabakh Horse is the national animal of Azerbaijan that is known for its speed and intelligence and are the oldest breed in the world. Azerbaijanis are very possessive about their horses.

7. AZERBAIJAN IS ACTUALLY VERY SMALL.

It is roughly the same size as Armenia and Georgia, but has more than what its neighbouring countries has to offer.

8. AZERIS ENJOY PROVERBS.

The famous proverbs used across the country are “Cheap meat never makes a good soup” or “Politeness is not sold in the bazaars”.

9. THERE IS A CITY THAT IS BUILT ON POLES.

The settlement of Neft Daslari is an entire stilted city which was built in 1949 and people have cropped up bakeries, shops and hotels in it.

10. BLAME THE VOLCANOES

Azerbaijan is home to around 400 volcanoes which is half of the world’s mud volcanoes. When the volcanoes erupt, the flames shoot up in the air and pop up with noxious gases which have a very obnoxious smell.
