The only reason this is called “mermaid lace” is because of the yarn used to create the original sample…it was given to me and called mermaid yarn, due to its beautiful oceany colors. It has nothing to do with the lace pattern, so if you already know what the “mermaid lace” pattern is and you get upset because the pattern below does not in any way reflect that pattern — you have been warned.

This is a very simple lace pattern, wonderful for beginners.

You can work this up in basically any yarn. I suggest using larger than usual needles than your yarn calls for in order to facilitate the lacy look and feel.

I have knit this using a bulky yarn, as well as a DK weight yarn, and it turns out wonderfully. This is also why this can be a headband or an ear warmer. The yarn and needles you choose designate how much of the head/ears gets covered by the end product.

You can also widen the pattern by adding 7 pattern stitches (see lace pattern below), as many times as you need to in order to make your piece the size you want it. You could also change needle sizes to see how you like the width.
