Winner, Winner,
Steak Dinner.

Or the best steak we’ve ever had.

Let’s rewind exactly 9 months to the day I’ve decided to participate in the photo contest MEAT AND FLY sponsored by Gourmetfleisch.de and SWISS. Having only 10 days to take a picture and to spread it among my friends, to get enough votes and to make it to the final round was kind of a challenge. In the end a jury chose the winner. And guess what: it was me. I was the proud winner of 2 flights to New York City, a 300$ gift card for Wolfgangs Steakhouse in NYC, a box of gourmet meat and a Canon 700D. To be honest, I was overwhelmed. This was simply the biggest prize I’ve ever won.

Although a lot of people wanted me to take them on my trip to the States, I’ve decided to take Nils and make this our very first trip together. To be sure we wouldn’t end up in front of closed doors at Wolfgangs Steak House, we’ve decided to play save and make a reservation 2 months before arrival. Having the choice of 4 different restaurants, we went for the nicest looking location on 4 Park Avenue. The restaurant is famous for its dry aged porterhouse steak. Being not a real expert in steak, I wasn’t really sure what to expect – except for a really fancy dinner.

Deciding for a wine wasn’t easy. The cheapest bottle of red wine was around 45$, ending with a bottle for more than 4.000$. Considering our budget, we’ve decided to go for a cabernet sauvignon for 60$ – which of course was really delicious.

Starting with a great seafood platter for two, for the market price of 29 Dollar per person we enjoyed a really delicious lobster on ice, king prawns and something we actually couldn’t define (most probably it was lobster, too). Since eating lobster was one thing on Nils’ USA bucket list and we could tick it off the list now, I still insisted on eating lobster on the road while roadtrippin’ from Boston to Chicago.

After finishing the big seafood platter, the porterhouse steak for two (100 Dollars) along with spinach and a baked potato was served – and it was huge. Full of excitement to finally eat NYC’s finest steak, at the place where celebrities walk in and out regularly, we had our first bite – and both of us were blown away. Even Nils, who is really hard to impress and usually entitles good food with a simple “it’s ok”, was kind of speechless. Even the spinach, a really ordinary side dish- tasted extraordinarily good.

Finishing up our wine at the bar after paying a total of 290 Dollars and giving the rest as an extra tip for the really good service, we left the restaurant happy, full and with memories of a dinner we normally could have never afforded.
