Developers need no-meeting days. Here’s why.
You know RAM on your computer?
For those who don’t, your computer uses RAM to store all the memory it currently needs to display all the windows on your desktop, open tabs, switching applications, stuff like that. It’s all the things it needs to think of right now, and keep in close proximity for you to do the things you’re doing on your computer. Make sense?
That’s what computer programming is like.
You have all these things you’re doing and trying while coding and it’s all over the place in your head. You know where everything is, you made mental notes of various things.
For example, you know you have to go to that thing in that file over there, but it relies on this thing in another file over here, I need to search this thing on google first cause I forgot the format of a for loop, I’m gonna try if this thing works. Now I need to debug, but I can’t forget to go back to that other file and update with the fix, then resume that thing in the file over there. And so on.
Basically, you’re thinking of a lot of things at the SAME time.
So when I get that Google calendar notification that my meeting is about to begin or I get interrupted for any reason at all…all of that “RAM” goes out the window. *whoosh*
To get back to what you were coding or doing, you have to bring all that information back to the forefront of your mind. That takes a lot of time, and even then, you won’t have remembered everything, so you might miss something completely.
Basically, developers need less meetings, less distractions. It takes up so much time physically, but also mentally. And time is the most valuable asset.
At my company, we have 1 no-meeting day a week and it is glorious. Everybody is super productive that day, and because nobody is in meetings, you get feedback and PR reviews much faster which makes you even more productive. Now imagine if your whole company had a focus day, and how productive that day would be.
I understand meetings are still necessary, but so is having focus time. It’s arguably way more important than meetings. So if you’re company doesn’t have dedicated no-meeting/focus day, consider bringing it up.
It helps a lot.
Cheers to lesser meetings 🥂
