Steps

  1. Planning

We spent some time measuring the dimension of the available space and trying to fit the monitor, Mirror, wood platte on it. We designed the overall view as below

2. Ordering

We bought all the materials (except the MDF platte and the two way acrylic mirror)and this was ok in regards to time and availability. On the other hand, the MDF platte and the two ways acrylic mirror consumed a lot of time from us to find appropriate place to order. Finally we received them after 10–14 days from the order day.

After intensive research about where to find two way acrylic mirror here in Germany, we find out that we have just a very limited options. We hesitated between the spy mirror and the two way acrylic mirror. Then we decided to order the two way acrylic mirror from UK (www.cutplasticsheeting.co.uk). We received a very nice product, it is absolutely fantastic compared to the spy mirror. It is very shiny, clear, light and scratch resistance. If you are planning to build your smart mirror, we really recommend it.

Another intensive research was conducted about the board that we need to put the mirror and the monitor on. We hesitated between frame and wooden board . Then we chose MDF board which gave us the flexibility in the design. With the help of the laser cutter we ended up with a attractive board. We included in the design a place for the Matrix and Alya smart mirror logo. We received a perfect MDF platte cut and engraved by the laser cutter which added to the final shape perfection in the dimensions and the finishing. Although, the board has some dents when we received it due to the shipping bad handling. Here is the file for our design that we sent to the laser cutter online shop (www.sculpteo.com).

3. Execution

  1. After drawing the marks of the TV wall mount and the medicine cabinet on the wall, we drilled them.

2. We installed the suited wall screw plugs on the holes, then fixed the TV mount and the medicine cabinet on them.

3. By the tape we fixed the monitor, The Matrix and the vanity lights respectively. I know they look not perfect, we will improve this later :)

4. We installed the board on the TV wall mount.

5. In that moment, we fixed the mirror on the board by the mirror double- sided tape.

6. Then we put the kinect above the medicine cabinet and the the Up Squared board inside it.

7. Finally we turned everything on.
