Background

Express Entry is a program that offers a route to permanent residency for skilled workers, whether they are already in Canada or overseas. This program is designed to expedite the processing of applications within six months or less for potential skilled foreign workers.

Express Entry manages applications for permanent residency under various federal economic immigration programs i.e. the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. Provinces can recruit Express Entry candidates via Provincial Nominee Programs to meet local labour needs.

How Express Entry Works

Step 1:

Express your interest in immigrating to Canada as a skilled worker by creating an Express Entry profile and providing information about your skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other relevant details. To be eligible for Express Entry, you must meet the requirements of at least one of three federal economic immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or Canadian Experience Class.

Express Entry pool

After submitting your profile, you will receive a score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System to determine your position in the pool. The system takes into account various factors such as work experience, skills, language proficiency, education level, and other factors that contribute to economic success for immigrants in Canada. For example, having strong French language skills, a sibling in Canada, or a valid job offer in the country can positively impact your score.
While you are in the pool, it is important to update your profile regularly to reflect any changes in your status, such as language proficiency, education, or family members.
Candidates with the highest scores in the Express Entry pool are regularly invited to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Are you in need of assistance in finding a job? If so, you can begin your job search by creating a Job Match account with Job Bank. Moreover, even after arriving in Canada, you can still use Job Bank to search for jobs. Job Match account with Job Bank is an effortless and convenient online tool that helps you find employers who are looking for workers with your particular skillset.

Step 2: Invitation to Apply

You may receive an invitation to apply if you are nominated by a province or territory or if you are one of the highest-ranked candidates in the Express Entry pool based on your skills and experience.

If you receive an invitation, you have 90 days to apply online for permanent residence in one of the following programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class, or Express Entry streams of the Provincial Nominee Program. IRCC processes the majority of complete applications received within six months or less.

Provinces and territories are valuable partners in the immigration process. If you are applying for Express Entry, you may be eligible for a provincial or territorial nomination. These regions can nominate candidates who meet their specific labour market needs. Some provinces and territories will search the pool of candidates, while others require direct applications. To learn more about the requirements and how to be considered for a nomination, visit the immigration website of your intended province of destination. If you are nominated through a Provincial Nominee Program, you will be invited to apply for permanent residence.

The Express Entry system is a popular pathway for skilled workers looking to immigrate to Canada. By understanding how the system works and taking steps to improve your CRS score, you can greatly improve your chances of successfully immigrating to Canada through Express Entry.
